Summer Library Challenge for Adults

June 1st - August 7th, 2016

The Weatherford Public Library offers an Adult Summer Library Challenge for adults of any age! Why should kids have all of the fun? For ten weeks during the summer, you can earn prizes by reading, attending programs, and exploring library resources.

The Adult Summer Library Challenge is made possible by the Friends of Weatherford Public Library and our many partners. Thanks to their generosity, all summer activities at Weatherford Public Library are free.

It is with regret that the staff at the Weatherford Public Library closes the Summer Reading Challenge and Adult Summer Library Challenge for 2016. The last couple of months seems to have gone by in a flash and we enjoyed every minute of it. We would like to extend out thanks to everyone who shared their summer with our library and to celebrate in the achievements of those who participated in the Summer Reading Challenge and Adult Summer Library Challenge.

To start, thanks and congratulations are due to our kids and teens – 1541 youngsters aged from birth to 18 registered in our Reading Rewards program and of these 48% completed the program. We are so proud of them all, but special recognition is due to the 245 kids and teens who kept reading past 20 hours and participated in the Summer Reading Raffle this year. When you add it all up, the kids and teens read 22,175 hours between June 1st and August 7th and all we can say is “Wow”!

2016 marked the return of a reading program for adults with our Adult Summer Library Challenge. We haven’t hosted a reading program for grown-ups in a few years and we weren’t sure what to expect. However, our wonderful Community and Events Librarian, Kellie Boyd, put together an absolutely brilliant program, challenging adults to complete a variety of activities that highlight the best the library can offer. It seems our patrons agreed with us – 420 participants registered for the program and 36% of them completed at least one challenge. At final count, 1435 challenges were completed by the participants, which we think deserves a round of applause for these enterprising ladies and gentlemen.

We held 142 events and activities this summer and a total of 6150 people of all ages attended these programs. Most of these events were helmed by Weatherford Public Library staff, but for 43 of the programs performers and speakers were invited to our library. These speakers included folks from Parker County who have supported our summer activities for many years – our Master Gardeners, the City of Weatherford Animal Shelter, Karate University and Texas AgriLife Extension. Fifteen of the events featured performances that were made possible through the generosity of the Friends of the Weatherford Public Library and the Texas Commission of the Arts. We owe much to these groups and individuals who helped us to create a wonderful roster of performers this year. Of course, we also would like to express our appreciation of all the performers and speakers that shared their time and talents with us. We loved hosting them at our library and wish them the best in the coming year.

Weatherford Public Library is always fortunate to count many groups and organizations in Parker County as partners and this summer was no exception. As always, we hope we can ask our patrons to help us thank them for their kindness and generosity. If you happen to stop by their place of business or see one of their representatives at the many other events in which they participate, shake their hand and share how much we appreciate them. Neither the Summer Reading Challenge nor the Adult Summer Library Challenge would have been possible without them.
